TMJ DISORDER

TMJ or Temporomandibular joints are the jaw muscles and the joints that allow your mouth to open and close. The muscles and ligaments work together to help you bite, chew, swallow, and speak by controlling your lower jaw as it moves.

If there is a problem that prevenbts this system of bones, muscles, ligaments, and discs from working together properly, then a TMJ disorder or TMD may develop.

SIGNS OF TMD

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw
  • Aches or pains around the ears
  • Aches or pains around the cheeks or face
  • Difficulty opening and closing your jaw
  • Locked jaw while eating or sleeping

WHAT CAUSES TMD?

  • Arthritis
  • Dislocation or injury to the jaw
  • Tooth and jaw misalignment
  • Teeth Grinding

TREATMENTS FOR TMD

There is no cure for TMD, but palliative treatments are available.

  • Avoiding hard food such as hard candy, bones, nuts, and eating softer food
  • Cutting up food into smaller pieces so the jaw does not open past its maximum opening
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Meditation or practice techniques of relaxing jaw muscles through out the day
  • Bite plate to reduce clenching and grinding of teeth
  • Orthodontics
  • TMJ surgery (no guarantee and not common treatment)
