Caries, commonly known as Cavities, are caused by bacteria in the mouth that thrive on the plaque and tartar that remain in your mouth over night.
Also, having sugary food and drink constantly will weaken tooth enamel until the dentin layer breaks down and creates a hole or a cavity in the tooth.
For cavities that have not yet turned into a hole, there is a conserative treatment option with Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). SDF kills the bacteria that cause cavities without the need for local anesthesia injection.
If there is already a hole, the tooth may be still restorable.
If the decay already reached the pulp, root canal therapy, followed by post and core and a crown will be necessary to keep the tooth.
Otherwise, an alternative treatment will be extraction.
