It is a 'cap' that is put over a tooth to restore the tooth to normal function, size, and look.

Crown can be made out of several different materials:

1. Metal alloy

2. Porcelain

3. Ceramic

4. Zarconia

5. Porcelain or ceramic fused to the metal alloy

6. Porcelain fused to the zarconia

Most crown prosthesis made by Dr. Young are non-metal crowns, and come with a 5-year warranty that the materials are free of defects.

Your dentist may recommend a crown for a tooth with following types of situation:

  • A tooth that has just received root canal therapy

  •  A tooth that has a significant crack to cause persistent sensitivity

  • A tooth that had lost most of its tooth structures to decay so that it cannot be restored with a routine filling successfully

  • A tooth that is severely discolored

Process of Getting Your Dental Crown

  • All the enamel and part of the dentin will be removed all around the tooth that is to receive a dental prosthetic crown.

  • An impression of the tooth will be made either using the mold or digital scan.

  • An interim (temporary) crown or bridge will be placed on the tooth to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being fabricated by a professional dental laboratory. This can take up to two weeks.

  • When the final crown is ready, your dentist will place it on the tooth, make necessary adjustments, and cement with a dental cement.
